Reduction of Physiological Stress Using Fractal Art and Architecture

چکیده

The author reviews visual perception studies showing that fractal patterns possess an aesthetic quality based on their visual complexity. Specifically, people display an aesthetic preference for patterns with mid-range fractal dimensions, irrespective of the method used to generate them. The author builds upon these studies by presenting preliminary research indicating that mid-range fractals also affect the observer’s physiological condition. The potential for incorporating these fractals into art and architecture as a novel approach to reducing stress is also discussed. AR TS C IE N C E: T H E ES S EN TI AL C O N N EC TI O N Fig. 1. A photograph of a forest (top); an artistic rendition of a landscape (middle); and painted lines (bottom). (© Richard Taylor) covery that this aesthetic quality might be accompanied by a positive response in the observer’s physiology lends considerable support to previous proposals for fractal art and fractal architecture [14–18]. I therefore consider the artistic and architectural challenges of incorporating fractal imagery into buildings to affect people’s perceptual and physiological responses.

Fractal Art and Architecture Reduce Physiological Stress

Human beings are apparently tuned to prefer an environment that has the self-similar properties of a fractal. Furthermore, as different types of fractals are characterized by what is known as their “fractal dimension” D , we respond best to “mid-range” fractals where D is between 1.3 and 1.5. In such fractal environments, our body automatically dampens its response to stress induced by intensiv...

A study on dimensions of Fractal geometry in Iranian architecture

The subject of geometry and proportions has been regarded as an issue which has a close relationship with architecture. Since the entire universe, living beings and the human geometry can be seen clearly, that’s why our unconscious essence has accustomed to these proportions whereby reflection of this mentality can be seen in the architect’s hands and thought in the architecture. It can witness...

Early Islamic Architecture and Structural Configurations

Islam spread rapidly after its founding, encompassing much of North Africa, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia. The art of this vast region draws its distinctive character both from Islam itself and from the diverse cultural traditions of the world’s Muslims. Because Islam discouraged the use of figurative images, particularly in religious contexts- unlike Christian art- Islamic artists develo...

Effect of Melatonin Premedication on Some Physiological Parameters and Reduction of Oxidative Stress in Tagetes etecta Seedlings under Salt Stress

Salinity is one of the most important environmental stresses which affect the growth of plants. Most of the plants are sensitive to salt stress at the seedling stage, so the growth of them in salt-water accompanies with problems. Various agronomic and physiological practices (treatments) are applied to minimize the adverse effects of salinity on plant growth and using of plant growth regulator ...

Analysis of Herat embroidery patterns from the perspective of fractal geometry

Geometric shapes and motifs are a combination of the human spiritual mind which sees the existence of beautiful and paints a historical civilization through this vision. The geometric motifs are an expression of the rhythmic and balanced human beings possessions when the human being wants to imagine beyond the present and create a world full of love. The patterns/shapes are the basis of artwork...
